A few nights ago I experienced my first ever lucid dream. Now, for those who don’t know what lucid dreaming is, it’s basically when you become aware that you are in a dream and have full control of the entire dream. Pretty crazy, inception-like stuff going on.
I know a lot of people out there in the world have written techniques on how to achieve this phenomena but it was completely unintentional on my part. So the back story is, I didn’t get much sleep due to having early shifts at work throughout the entire weekend, so when I was finally able to get some sleep, I knocked out with the quickness. Sometimes, when I’m really sleep deprived, I get sleep paralysis, which is the creepier cousin of lucid dreaming, so it’s probably why the lucid dream happened randomly.
So, in my dream I was stealing or something from Best Buy and I got caught lol. All the managers and supervisors started chasing after me and I ran to the warehouse and the door was open. I decided to fly away like Superman status. This is where I became self-aware I was in a dream.
It’s sort of like you’re watching a video game cutscene and it suddenly gives you control. I was asking myself “oh shit am I lucid dreaming?” and I had complete mental awareness of what happened and what I was doing. It was in first person and I was flying high up in the clouds. It was exactly like how they were flying in the movie Chronicles. I had complete control over my flight and it was so damn realistic. You could feel the butterflies in your stomach as you did a dive and feel the wind fly past your hair as you were moving. It’s almost scary how close it felt like to reality.
I spent a good 30 or so seconds flying around freely when my mind brought up the movie Insidious. In Insidious, there’s a chance that your body will get possessed by a demon when you have an out of body experiences/lucid dream. Being kind of superstitious, I started to freak out and tried to force myself to wake up. This ended up in a back and forth tug-of-war where it switched from clouds to darkness back to clouds back to darkness. It finally went back to complete darkness and I realized my body was still in sleep paralysis mode and I couldn’t move. After a minute or so my body was paralyzed no more and I was able to finally get up.
Looking back on it all now, I wish I was brave enough to continue the dream. The realism and freedom of it all was pretty damn amazing. I know some people may think lucid dreaming/out of body experiences are just a hoax or think that the dreamers are just crazy. Hell, I didn’t half believe it myself, but due to this experience I now know this phenomena is completely real and it amazes me just how powerful the mind can be. I’m probably not going to force another lucid dream to happen but I would like to be given another opportunity to re-do this experience once again.

The whole flying sequence was exactly like that, except by myself haha
